i-Transport Lab (ITL) was founded in October 2000 as a University of Tokyo spin-off, funded by around ten university faculty members specialising in transportation engineering. In the twenty-five years since, we have worked on advancing traffic simulation technology and putting it to practical use.

In our early years there were many obstacles to simulation being used widely in the real world: how to obtain data, how to guarantee that a model was reproducible and trustworthy, and how to interpret the results. We took those problems on, proposed concrete ways of applying traffic simulation, and helped both the technology and its market to grow.

We now stand at a new stage. Three-dimensional city models from the PLATEAU programme, real-time estimation through nowcast techniques, traffic control using Beyond 5G: the urban digital twin is becoming a practical reality.

Under the idea of applying science to the flow of the city, we have shifted our focus from communicating technology to committing to the solution of social problems. We will keep contributing to safe and sustainable cities, working alongside as many people and organisations as we can.
